Description: Whilst in the vicinity of the northern portal of Combe Down tunnel I could hear the unmistakable throb of diesel engines deep within the confines of the bore. A few minutes later a Class 08 shunter emerged into the daylight. Expecting to see a train of wagons being towed the sight that met my eyes was rather surprising. From a private collection of slides of the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway, taken in the year following closure of the line in 1966.
Photographed in November 1967. See Image Ref. 29045.
