Description: The line leading up Devonshire bank and into Devonshire tunnel is seen from bridge No. 9, Maple Grove which can be seen in the lower picture. This bridge still stands today. Devonshire Tunnel was one fifth of a mile long not as bad as Combe Down but still unpleasant nonetheless for locomotive crews working their engines hard up the 1 in 50 climb. From a private collection of slides of the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway, taken in the year following closure of the line in 1966.
