Description: The Beaufort Hotel became the Hilton Hotel in April 1988 and has gained notoriety as a symbol of the 'Sack of Bath' and the unsympathetic clearance and developments of the 1960s and early 1970s. The ventilation shaft was part of a much grander scheme that might have involved aerial walkways over a new road system. It became a symbol for the aborted plans by Buchanan to radically overhaul Bath's traffic.
Photographed in September 1988.
