Description: Cream silk court mantua consisting of a bodice with an attached train, stomacher, petticoat and shoes to match (see image 55622). The mantua has been richly embroidered with a botanical deisgn in metal thread and coloured silks. This court dress dates from early in the reign of George III, who came to the throne in 1760. Hooped skirts had fallen out of fashion for everyday dress by the beginning of George III’s reign, but for grand mantuas such as this, which would have been especially embroidered and made up to attend formal occasions at the Royal court (to mark the King’s birthday for example), they were still required wear.
