Description: Cheque No. 482 4th January 1799 from Messrs. Hobhouse, Clutterbuck, Phillott and Lowden to Wm. Smith for £225 on Account of the Somersetshire Coal Canal Company. Signed by John Billingsly, Samuel James and Rd. Langford. One of many cheques collected by Sidney Sydenham, this one is pasted inside the cover of Horace Woodward's 4th volume on The Jurassic Rocks of Britain. Almost certainly his final cheque, paid shortly before his dismissal from the Canal Company. The amount is probably a half yearly payment.
