Description: This image emphasises the size of the embankment constructed to cross the valley. The Camerton to Limpley Stoke railway was opened in 1910, following the route of the abandoned Somersetshire Coal Canal. It provided passenger services until 1915, pausing in wartime and resuming in 1923, before closing in 1925. The line carried goods and coal throughout until its complete closure in 1950. It was resurrected in 1952 for the filming of The Titfield Thunderbolt. Avonhill in Midford can be seen in the background. The track in the foreground was laid on the towpath next to the Somersetshire Coal Canal to bring materials to the construction site.
Postcard by George Love Dafnis of Bath. Copied from a private collection of postcards. See Image Ref. 22112 for the glass negative of this image.
