Description: A notable feature of the image is the cultivation of vegetables in front gardens that alludes to concepts of agrarianism within the semi-urban contemporary planning context and represents a cultural extension of the nearby Monksdale Road allotments for which land was allocated when the estate was first built. Map evidence suggest that allotments did not form part of the associated fabric of the city's Victorian and Edwardian working class suburbs and as such their appearance in the city represents a cultural shift in which allotments and domestic cultivation were seen as crucial to the character of such estates (Robin Parkes).
