Description: The building was opened by the Mayor in May 1964 with a long list of V.I.P. attendees. The home was designed by F.W. Beresford Smith and built as a hostel for elderly persons. The Hostel offered accommodation for 43 persons, 3 single bedrooms, 5 double bedrooms and 5 sitting rooms. A Centre for Handicapped Persons offered handicraft and instruction rooms, a concert hall with stage, television room, quiet room, games room etc. This resident stands with her box of Daz and washing soda beside a shiny new sink.
