Description: The foreshortening effect of the lens provides an unusual view. Dealing first with the spires, these are of St Swithin, Walcot (middle bottom), St Matthew, Widcombe (upper middle) and St John Evangelist RC, South Parade (right). The Empire Hotel is on the extreme right (with Pulteney Bridge immediately below) and Prior Park is in the far distance, nearly on the skyline. The centre of the photograph is Laura Place, with Henrietta Street catching the sun and coming towards the camera in a slight arc. The gasholder in Pulteney Rd can be seen on the left with Abbey View Gardens and Tyning Rd above. The old city jail in Grove Street puts in an appearance above the photograph's caption and there is a glimpse further up Grove Street into a sunlit Argyle St. The black chimney on the right belongs to the tram depot in Walcot Street. The convent of La Sainte Union is just visible on the extreme left over the blackened rear elevation of Great Pulteney Street. Among the many other tiny details, the pyramid roof of Widcombe Baptist Chapel can also be made out. 21 June 1936
