Description: Towards the middle of the nineteenth century growing awareness of public health issues in crowded cities encouraged the making of highly detailed maps. It was decided in 1855 that all towns of over four thousand inhabitants should be mapped by the Ordnance Survey at the scale of 10.56 feet to the mile. By 1894 when the series was discontinued, 365 towns in England had been mapped at this scale. The Museum of Bath Architecture Collection and the Bath Record Office have a full set of the 74 sheets that cover Bath.
