Description: The most iconic map of pre-Georgian Bath, Gilmore's map was bordered by remarkable images of Bath's Lodging Houses. In the style of a modern day tourist map, it provides a revealing insight into Medieval Bath. All by the Art and Industry of Joseph Gilmore, Teacher of Mathematicks in the City of Bristol. Extracted by Dr. Guidot (Guidott) out of his Antiquities of Bath, 1717. Sold by Henry Hammond, Bookseller in Bath and Thomas Taylor, Map and printseller at the Golden Lion in Fleet Street, London. Sold also by Mr. Richard Gravett, Bookseller in Bristol.
From a collection of glass lantern slides, donated to the Bath Record Office : Local Studies. It is possible they were created by a surveyor with an interest in Bath's architecture who was engaged in work at Prior Park, the Assembly Rooms and the Guildhall. See Image Refs. 13789, 27286, 27710 and 30557.
