Description:

Also known as the Royal Old Ferry, this chain ferry ran from the end of Old Ferry Road to where Fielding's Bridge (from which the photo was probably taken) ends on the north bank. It was the last operational ferry in Bath, closing in April 1906.The ferryman is operating the gears with the chain running through them that pulled the boat between the banks. Beyond is Weston Island with the Weston Cut and accommodation bridge to the right and part of the Upper Mills in the distance down the river.

From a collection of photos with unidentified photographers.
