Description: An authentic account of the affair that happened at Bath, between Count Rice and Viscount Du Barry. Ungentlemanly like behaviour led them to duel at Claverton Down. Du Barry hit Rice in the thigh, Rice shot Du Barry in the chest. The second shots both flashed in the pan and the duellists then used their swords, the Viscount fell and died after calling for his life. Count Rice recovered from his wounds. The inquest found death by manslaughter. By William Brereton, M.C. Count Rice was later charged and prosecuted at the Assizes for murder, but acquitted. Viscount du Barry is buried in Bathampton Church.
