Description: A portrait of the astronomer William Herschel (1738-1822) discovered in a house sale at Pulteney Street, formally the residence of Sir William Watson, signed by L.F. Abbott, 1785 (the year Herschel exhibited his great telescope at Windsor). This portrait, purchased in 1860, is now in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery.
