Description: Until recently a Friends' Meeting House, it was then purchased by the Methodist Free Church who renamed it Hope Chapel. With a partially rebuilt front and a new entrance, it was also lit by gas and is an improvement on the old chapel in York Street.
The chapel had been Roman Catholic, but it was burnt down in a riot, then occupied by William Jay and the Independents for a year until the Argyle Street Chapel was completed. The Friends' occupied it for about 70 years.
