Description: The Old Bridge was known to exacerbate the effects of the river when in flood and the Council commissioned engineer Thomas Telford to survey the river and bridge to suggest improvements to reduce the problems. His suggested improvements would cost the Council £2,200, which they did not undertake due to the cost. The report is dated 16th August 1823
