Description: William Brereton's supplication to the ladies, noblemen and gentlemen subscribers to the Lower Assembly Rooms, following a duel with Captain Spooner. Brereton fought the duel on behalf of his son-in-law, on 12th February 1780, over a matter concerning gambling. Spooner was wounded, Brereton untouched. Brereton was later imprisoned.
