Description: John Speed's book the "Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine", 1611, included detailed plans of the principal towns inset into the county maps. Speed explains that some of the town maps were derived from the work of others, which probably included Bath. Whether or not Savile's map was the source for Speed, these two maps are clearly related. Speed's map is considerably smaller than that by Savile and some of the detail has been omitted or compressed to fit in the available space. Like Savile, Speed uses three dimensional sketches of buildings to show their location on the map. This approach is sometimes described as a 'bird's-eye view'. This is the second edition of this map.
