Description: This handsome road map is from John Ogilvy's Britannia, which was the first survey of the roads of England and Wales. It was also the first graphic delineation of roads which established the practice of representing the road on the continuous unfolding strip. It shows the journey from London to Bath and Wells. The route is shown in seven strips, mile by mile, showing every town, village, wood and milestone along the way. Each strip has a compass rose showing north. Large, decorated title cartouche at top centre with royal arms below. Uncoloured. By John Ogibley Esque his Majesties Cosmographer the first containing 128 mile 6 furlong viz. From the standard in Cornhill, London to Chippenham in the Bristol road 94:5 to the city of Bath: 14 1.
