Description: Commissioned by Princess Marie, daughter of King Louis Philippe I of France, this painting was exhibited in Bath in 1845. It was inspired by an ancient ballad lamenting the death of a young woman.
Painted by Thomas Jones Barker (1815-1882), oil on canvas. Son of Thomas Barker of Bath, his uncles and brother were also painters. After this early commission, he later became known for his depictions of battle scenes.
