Description: Tortoiseshell could be moulded when heated, so was well suited for curved hair combs and delicate fans.The hawksbill sea turtle is now critically endangered and the trade in tortoiseshell, usually from larger turtles and tortoises, was banned in 1973 under CITES legislation.
